Dear Friend,

Picasso is not imitating, he is getting inspiration, transcending the past into a modern vision.
If he imitates, very exceptionally and while he is still in his early years, it is on some posters directly inspired from Toulouse - Lautrec.
Or, also, with Georges Braque, when they get roped together, copying each other alternatively, to invent "cubism". |

All his life, questioning his relationship to painting, he will get back, again and again, to the masters.
Those painters, like Delacroix, Manet, Velasquez, Rembrandt, Goya, El Greco, from whom he will be picking up on one or several works, will help answer his essential question.
The question that his own naturalist and Mediterranean inspiration, immediate in its drawing and powerfully erotic in its engines cannot answer by itself. |

How far can the line, the profile, transform the body curve (Ingres)? Is the oriental scenography able to break the iron-collar of classical art (Delacroix, Matisse)?
May the erotic evocation of the middle-class open new expression fields (Manet, Degas)?
Is the relation to the model something else but erotic (Raphael)?
And finally, is the relation of the viewer, beginning by the painter himself, so passive (Velasquez, les Menines)? |

No evolution, and so few "periods" shape Pablo.
What moves him is his permanent questioning.

BRUGGES
Located only a 3 hour drive away, from Paris, stands one of the beautifully medieval architectural cities in Europe. Therefore it is not a surprise if Brugges is the most visited place in Belgium.
There you will find everything for almost any taste. Flemish Primitive painters are well represented in several museums. Chocolate aficionados will find some excellent small chocolate "laboratories". Lovers will stroll the cobbled alleys or cruise the many canals (no cruising on winter time). Gourmets will find one of the only two , three star restaurants of Belgium. Beer lovers will be in Paradise with numerous local products to be experienced in their glass or through beer cooking.
Brugges is definitively one of those places you should see in your lifetime. A real plus is it's beautiful all year long. I traditionally love staying at de De Tuilerieen, you might also try the Kempiski Hotel.
I hope you will have found these few lines inspiring. For more info and suggestions do not hesitate to email us, we are always happy to help.
